A Mathematical Approach to Bingo

Let's be honest, we all love a bit of bingo now and again, perhaps as a refreshing break from online casino or online poker, or perhaps as our only foray into the entertaining and unpredictable world of online gaming. On the whole, offline and online bingo may be a random game largely dictated by luck, but that doesn't mean that there isn't any room for a touch of strategy and skill.

Although gaining an edge in any game of online bingo is marginal at best, there is certainly scope for improving your overall EV by following the mathematical proposal put forward by Joseph E. Granville. Known far and wide for his intelligent insights and theories in the stock trading world, Granville drew inspiration for his bingo strategy from the statistical analysis of fellow numbers genius L.H.C Tippet.

A mathematical peer of Granville, Tippet discovered that: "As a random sample is increased in size, it gives a result that comes closer and closer to the population value." Using this as a basis, Granville extrapolated the main insight of this conclusion to suggest that you can more accurately predict the numbers that will be drawn during a game by looking at the "population". Taking a bingo game's master board to be the source of the population, Granville noted that an inspection of these numbers will reveal an average that's equal to half the number of balls in play. This, and other tips and bits and pieces of gaming strategy can be researched further on if you're interested.

Looking at Granville's analysis further, you can see, for example, that in a 75 ball game the expected average of the population will gradually converge on 38 (which is, roughly, half of 75). Similarly, in a 90 ball game, the population average gradually converges around the number 45 as the game develops.

The reason this information is important is because it means you (in theory at least) stand a higher chance of hitting more numbers during a game if you choose a card with numbers that have an average close to 38 (75 ball game) or 45 (90 ball game).

Whilst Granville's theory may be mathematically sound, it doesn't necessarily mean it will help you to win more money. However, what it does show is that through a process of statistical reasoning you can turn a seemingly purely luck based game into a far more logical, and therefore far more beatable and less intimidating, proposition.

Whether or not you follow this age-old mathematical advice the next time you head down to your local bingo hall, or tell your grandparents all about it before their weekly session at the church hall, remains to be seen!
